All love WhatsApp, the most popular messaging service on the planet. Daily we use your entertaining platform to communicate with our friends and family. But the foundation of WhatsApp has an admirable history of struggle and overcoming starring its creator Jan Koum.
Koum was born on February 24, 1976 in Kiev, Ukraine. But because of the political and social problems that were in his country, he moved to California in 1992 with his family.
Jan remembers her mother into her suitcase notebooks and books, to avoid paying for school supplies in the United States. They settled in Mountain View and thanks to a social support program could live in a two bedroom apartment. By then I was 16 and the plan was later his father to join them in the United States, which never happened.
Jan's mother began working as a nanny and cleaning staff of a shop. Jan was 18 when he became interested in programming. "I did not have a computer until age 19," he recalls. He taught himself to learn about computers, reading manuals and books. Then he joined a group of hackers called "ww00w00" and there he met the founders of companies like Napster, Shawn Fanning and Jordan Ritter.
These contacts allowed him to enroll at the University of San José and work in the security department of Ernst & Young. But Jan was more interested in working than studying, so he left college before graduating.
He was hired as an engineer Yahoo after meeting Brian Acton and worked there until 1997. That was a tough year for the death of his father. His mother would die in 2000.
In 2007 he decided to take a year off and travel to South America with his friend Brian.
Jan applied to work on Facebook but was rejected. Then when you bought an iPhone in 2009, he realized that their device and the App Store would open a new world of apps. Then he began to talk to Alex Fishman on a possible application and that is how the name was born WhatsApp.
A week later it had been founded WhatsApp Inc. That was on February 24, 2009 and the company was based in California. The $ 400,000 (€ 358.873) which saved while working in Yahoo was enough to create the company.
As the app needed a developer for the iOS platform, he presented to Igor Fishman Solomennikov. "Jan showed me the contacts he had in his iPhone and said it would be great to have states with names," recalls Fishman.
The purpose of the application was to be a mobile messaging service that will operate under subscription. Now it used to send text, images, videos and audio messages.
The app became extremely popular when Apple launched notifications in June 2009. The states became one of the main features of WhatsApp.
Then five former employees of Yahoo came together to invest $ 250,000 (€ 224.296) in the startup.
Chris Peiffeer then joined the company to create the version for BlackBerry platform. WhatsApp for 2011 was already the most popular messaging service in the world.
Sequoia Capital invested $ 7 million (€ 6.2 million) and by 2013 the app had 200 million users, and only had 50 employees. Sequoia intone contributed an additional $ 50 million (€ 44.8 million) and raised the value of the company up to $ 1.5 billion (€ 1.3 million).
In February 2014 WhatsApp Koum decided to sell Facebook for the sum of $ 22 billion (€ 19.7 MM) and remained on the board of the firm. It was one of the most important sales in the world of technology and elevated to the status of billionaire Jan.
Jan donated $ 1 million (€ 897.183) to the FreeBSD Foundation in November 2014 and that same year made an incredible donation for $ 556 million (€ 498 million) to the foundation of Silicon Valley. Today Forbes estimated her fortune to Koum of $ 9.1 billion (€ 8.1 million). Still single.
WhatsApp continues to grow. WhatsApp in February 2016 achieved the feat of 1,000 million users. Facebook recently announced that the courier would become free.
