Kerkor Kerkorian, El Exitoso Empresario Estadounidense Que Sentó Las Bases De Su Enorme Fortuna Arriesgando Su Vida En La Guerra

In 2009 Kirk decided to sell much of its shares in its parent company MGM Mirage to devote more of his private life. In 2014 he married his girlfriend of many years a Davis. It would be his fourth marriage.

When Jean Paul Getty died in 1976 he had a fortune of $ 2 billion (€ 1.8 million). That, adjusted for inflation, today would be $ 8.3 billion (€ 7.5 million). That enormous wealth made him the richest man in the world at the time, a title that preserved for three decades.

Jean Paul Getty and Getty Oil Company signed were for much of the 20th century symbols of power and wealth worldwide. Today it is most famous for museums and art collections that bear his name.

The history of oil tycoon is fraught with controversy and tragedy. He became famous kidnapping of his grandson, since Mr. Getty refused to pay the ransom. Others said he had 14 grandchildren and that if they gave money to the kidnappers abducting would follow the rest of his family. So many called him a heartless and insensitive.

Oil in the veins

Jean Paul Getty was born on December 15, 1892 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His father, George Franklin Getty, was always involved in the oil world. Jean Paul studied at the University of California and in the school holidays was to the oil fields with his father.

Jean Paul was always very ambitious and would soon create his own oil company in Tulsa for 24 years and had made his first million dollars.

Nancy Taylor oil well No. 1 Oil Well Site in Oklahoma was crucial to the financial success of the young Getty, so this was the first well drilled as an independent.

He made a fortune and started having a disordered life, parties and women. So his father to die predicted that his youngest son, namely Jean Paul would destroy the family business. But it would be wrong and very heavy.

When his father died in 1930, JPG received an inheritance of $ 500,000 ($ 7.1 million / € 6.4 billion today). He immediately became chairman of Getty Oil Company, a firm that began to restructure and amass.

When the United States entered World War II in 1941, Getty sent a message to an old friend who had a senior position in the Navy. This was the message:

"I'm 49 but I'm in good health. I have owned three yachts and have experience in the care and maintenance of ships. If the Navy can use me in any role, just let me know. "

The Navy did not need Getty as a sailor, then not summoned, but the institution and the entrepreneur always maintained excellent relationships.

Getty transformed the Middle East

Today when we talk about oil wells think in Middle East countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. But now we go back in time, to the 30s and 40s, when oil still had not been found in large numbers outside the United States.

In 1949 Getty made an investment the world cataloged as crazy. Getty took $ 9.5 million (about $ 100 million / € 90.7 million today) and bought an exclusive lease for 60 years for oil in the arid terrain of the Middle East, in a country that by then was unknown to most people: Saudi Arabia.

Before Getty reached the Middle East, Saudi Arabia was a small kingdom desolate, without any natural resources. There was no water.

He never had found oil in the Middle East and not found in the first four years of his adventure. Getty then disbursed $ 30 million ($ 300 million / € 272 million today) to seek more black gold.

In 1953 the gamble paid off in a big way. From that point on their small piece of land worthless would produce 16 million barrels of oil each year, which would transform the Middle East forever. Thus Getty quickly became a multimillionaire.

Saudi Arabia is currently in second place, behind Venezuela, among the countries with the largest oil reserves in the world. And in the top 10 nations with oil, six are countries in the Middle East.

JPG 1967 merged its three companies in a single call Getty Oil Company, which would be president throughout his life. Besides being a magante oil, also it became a successful investor in real estate, with properties such as the Hotel Pierre in New York City.

On the personal side, Getty was married and divorced four times. In total he had five children.

It was in 1957 when Fortune magazine suggested that Jean Paul Getty was the richest man in the world.

His fame and popularity increased. But apparently bothered media attention Getty, who moved to England.

Getty was also a great art collector, who wrote two books about it. The value of his art collection exceeded $ 4 million (€ 3.6 million), and owned works by Tintoretto, Titian, Gainsborough, Romney, Rubens, Renoir, Degas and Monet. Getty collection contained more than 660 items. This hobby began in the 30's.

He acquired a 60-acre mansion in Malibu, California, and added a new wing to the property for his art collection. Over the years some of his pieces went to the Museum of Los Angeles County, including painting "Martin Looter" Rembrandt.

Getty once said that a month received 3,000 letters from strangers who demanded money. In an article titled "It's hard to be a billionaire," published in a magazine, Getty said:

"I Never give money to people. It is unrewarding and wrong ".

If he were alive today Getty certainly would not be part of the initiative of Bill Gates and Warren Buffett called Giving Pledge, which invites billionaires to donate 50% of his fortune to charity. In an article published in 1965 in the "Saturday Evening Post" entitled "The World is wrong with Millonarios," Getty said:

"If I were fully convinced that by donating my fortune solve global poverty, 99.5% would give all my wealth immediately. Charitable foundations tend to only people who give away money. "

It was also his reputation for legendary cheapskate. It was said that he washed his socks to avoid paying someone else or not having to buy more socks than necessary.

The world learned that Getty was hard to loose money when they kidnapped his grandson, Jean Paul Getty III, in Italy. Then the magnate refused to pay the ransom of $ 16 million (€ 14.5 million).

When he was inquired about had amassed such an enormous fortune, Getty gave much importance to chance.
"I was born at the right time. If I had been born earlier or later I would have missed the huge profits generated by the First World War in this business (oil) ".
Jean Paul Getty died of heart failure on June 6, 1976 at the age of 83, at his mansion in England. In his will he bequeathed Getty $ 1.2 billion (€ 1.08 MM) to its foundation, the Getty Foundation, focused on art.

"I'm a bad boss. A good leader develops successors. But the truth is that nobody can wear my shoes, "he said in his later years.

Getty, a surname marked by tragedy

The Getty family is still very powerful. Forbes magazine estimated her fortune of $ 5.4 billion (€ 4.8 MM), positioned in 56th among the richest families in America. However, the money has not prevented the name is struck by tragedy.

The last fateful incident occurred in April 2015 when Andrew Getty, grandson of J. Paul Getty, was found dead at his home in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
Authorities said Andrew's body was found naked from the waist down in a pool of blood. They say it was due to "natural causes or an accident."

Gordon P. Getty, the fourth son of JPG and father of Andrew, publicly acknowledged in 1999 that had a double life, something that was already known in the high society of San Francisco. He had a relationship with a woman named Cynthia Beck for 10 years, with whom he had three daughters.

On the other hand, it has always been said that the tycoon said a distant relationship with his children, who did not want to leave his fortune relationship. Although his heirs were lucky that Sarah, the mother of J. Paul Getty, create a trust fund for the grandchildren. The fund, according to Forbes magazine, was worth $ 4 billion (€ 3.6 billion) in the 80 '.

Another misfortune was the kidnapping of the grandson, whom they cut off his ear and sent it to J.P. Getty. Finally the family paid a ransom of $ 2.8 million (€ 2.5 million). After being released, J. Paul Getty III became addicted to alcohol and drugs, until a heart attack left him quadriplegic and nearly blind.
One of the sons of JP Getty died in 1973, apparently by suicide. While Talitha Pol, his daughter, died of a heroin overdose.

The life of Jean Paul Getty leaves little human sensitivity lessons, but many in the business plan. He was a visionary who saw what others could not. He risked and its success was huge. Middle East countries owe their booming economy this American, who knew what Bill Gates today feels to be considered the richest man on the planet.
