La fortuna de Amancio Ortega (79) no deja de crecer. Las arcas del magnate español superan el valor de cualquier empresa de su país. Su último hito fue rebasar la capitalización del gigante Banco Santander, luego de dejar atrás a la firma Telefónica en marzo del 2015. El dueño de Zara es un coloso internacional, que incluso ha probado lo que se siente ser el hombre más rico del planeta.
Ocurrió en octubre de este año, cuando Ortega asumió el trono de los multimillonarios, aunque tan solo por unas pocas horas, desplazando así al fundador de Microsoft Bill Gates. No obstante, fue un hecho coyuntural y fugaz, ya que las acciones de Microsoft lograron recuperarse rápidamente del repentino bajón y Gates retomó la supremacía el mismo día de haberla perdido.
Actualmente Ortega figura como el cuarto hombre con más dinero del planeta de acuerdo a la publicación Forbes, con una fortuna estimada en $74,4 mil millones (€68 MM). Aunque en el ranking en tiempo real, ese que toma en cuenta los datos actualizados de la bolsa mundial, Ortega aparece como el segundo hombre más poderoso del mundo, relegando a otros “monstruos” como Warren Buffett y Jeff Bezos.
¿Quién es Amancio Ortega?
Ortega nació el 28 de marzo de 1936 en la localidad de Busdongo, en la comunidad autónoma de Castilla y León, España. Proviene de una familia de clase humilde. A los 12 años se vio obligado a abandonar los estudios y comenzó a trabajar en una camisería en La Coruña.
Luego de laborar en varias empresas, en 1963 comenzó por su cuenta y abrió una tienda llamada Goa, dedicada a la fabricación y comercialización de batas de señoras. Esa primera experiencia como gerente de una tienda de ropa le aportó invaluables conocimientos que le resultarían cruciales en el futuro. Goa gozó de mucho éxito en Galicia y 10 años después de su apertura, Ortega contaba con una cartera de 500 empleados.
Fue en 1975 cuando abrió su primera tienda Zara y algunos años más tarde uniría todo su conglomerado empresarial bajo el nombre de Inditex.
Hoy en día Zara es una de las tiendas de ropa de moda más populares del mundo. Existen 2.085 establecimientos Zara en 87 países de los cinco continentes, 452 de ellas en España. Los analistas coinciden en que el éxito de la marca radica en la prioridad tan absoluta que Ortega les ha dado a sus clientes. Ofrece un gran balance entre calidad-precio y cada semana se renueva un 40% de la mercancía. Como máximo, cada tres días se repone el stock en cada tienda.
Ortega, el discreto
Ortega es un hombre sumamente discreto. Jamás ofrece entrevistas y muy pocas veces se le ve en actos públicos. Se dice que gasta enormes sumas de dinero para proteger su privacidad y mantenerse como incógnito en España y el mundo. A Ortega le encanta montar caballo, al igual que a su hija menor. Por eso tiene su propio centro ecuestre en Finisterre, Galicia.
